     Peter
     Production Manager
     Pennsylvania State University, 1993

With an Engineering degree, plenty of training, and a 'can-do' mindset, Peter learned that he could accomplish anything at NVR. Read on to find out how he did it.

A typical day; what's it like?
There is no typical day for me. Generally, three times a week, I visit my different job sites. I drive from site to site, meeting with my Project Managers, subcontractors, developers, and customers. I also check on the homes under construction, on utility mains, and quality control issues. I talk to everyone who affects each job site working to resolve any issues that may arise.

Tell us about your best day on the job.
My best day on the job was the first time I sold a house. I was brought into the company on the production side of the business. After over 3 years of building homes, I challenged myself with a new opportunity - sales and marketing. Nothing in my background would have ever lead me to believe I would be "selling" anything - I have an engineer's personality (and degree).

The reason it was my best day was because my experience at NVR showed me that I could work on skills that did not come naturally to me, and strengthen them to be successful. It was very empowering to me as an individual to have success in an area outside my comfort zone.

What has your career growth been like?
When I was in production, I had both a job site mentor and a formal written/ classroom Production Training Program to help me along. I worked alongside a job site mentor every day in the field. The mentor taught me the topics related to a construction site…issues that are covered more formally in the classroom setting during the PTP program. This mix of classroom and job site training helped me learn very quickly.

When I moved into sales, I took advantage of NVR's high-intensity training programs, followed by a Professional Selling Skills course. Also, I received individual training on selling-related topics from my Sales Manager, other senior Sales & Marketing Representatives, and different people from our mortgage banking branch.

I then moved into a Cost Manager position. I took many corporate cost classes that taught me how to use the accounting software we incorporate into our business. I also took classes on how to identify and estimate all aspects of construction and home site costs.

NVR also has an individually-based "home library" of courses that cover a variety of topics.

What would you say is the ONE thing you enjoy most about working at NVR?
The people I work with every day. We hire the best people in the industry and make them better. Being surrounded by successful people enables you to constantly strive to be the best.

Tell us about your best experience with a homebuyer.
The best experience with the homebuyer is when they walk into the front door of their new home and they tell me it's everything they dreamed it would be. Buying a house is extremely emotional for our customers and when I see the big smile on their faces, I know I was an important part of making their dreams come true.
