Take us through a typical day on the job. What are the highlights? Each day finds me doing something different. I have time-definite responsibilities such as the monthly forecast, lot flow analysis, and under-construction report. But most of my job is dictated as needs arise. As a situation occurs during the course of business, I may be asked to analyze it and suggest solutions. This type of ad-hoc analysis and problem solving is the greater part of my job. I like developing solutions that contribute to my region and to the larger success of the company. Tell us about your best day on the job. I think the best days on the job for me are the ones where I have been able to provide a particularly useful analysis. I was able to forecast sales, housing starts, and settlements by community for the next three years for one of my divisions. The Division Manager was then able to put this analysis to work in many areas of his business. What would you say is the ONE thing you enjoy most about working at NVR? I enjoy the autonomy of my job. This position is truly whatever you choose to make of it. Although there are specific areas of the business that I am expected to analyze, the methods that I use and the actual analysis are left largely up to me. Along with the autonomy comes responsibility. I am expected to produce results. It is the combination of autonomy and responsibility that I find fulfilling. Is there anything about NVR and/or your particular position that you would want job candidates to know? There are many opportunities for career advancement. By working in finance, you are exposed to many aspects of the business and trained to provide meaningful problem analyses. Financial Analysts can choose to go into operations and eventually become Division Managers, or Land Managers. Once you have the appropriate homebuilding knowledge, you really can choose any career path you want. What would you tell someone to convince them to choose a career in homebuilding? What would you tell someone to convince them to choose NVR? Homebuilding is a solid industry, and NVR is the ideal choice for a career in finance. Because of the organizational structure, you have access to the key decision-makers in the company. Whether you see Division Managers, Regional Managers and Area Presidents in Operations, the Controller, CFO or CEO at Corporate Headquarters, you can expect your opinions and analysis to be heard and respected.
